PURPOSE

The Registered Professional Nurse is responsible for identifying patient needs and prioritizing care through assessment, planning, and appropriately delegating care.  When care is not provided directly by the Registered Nurse (RN), the RN assigns/delegates care to the other qualified members of the health care team.  The RN coordinates care between other professional disciplines as needed.  Through documentation and verbal communication, essential information is shared with health care team members.

This position is expected to demonstrate competency in clinical skills necessary for the implementation of ordered nursing care.  The Registered Nurse is expected to exercise informed judgment and uses individual competence and qualifications as criteria in prioritizing patient needs, seeking consultation, and performing duties to accomplish expected outcomes.  Failure to provide quality care may inhibit patient progress, jeopardize patient safety, and damage the image of the facility.

PRIMARY RESPONSIBILITIES

  • Conducts and documents a thorough assessment of each patients’ medical status upon admission and throughout the patients’ course of treatment.
  • Maintains quality of care for all patients entering the facility.
  • Assumes the duties of ED, Outpatient, OB or floor nurse as assigned by the shift supervisor.
  • Admits, assesses, and assumes care of OB patients and assists in that area when needed.
  • Educates patients and family members.
  • Assists with orientation of new employees.
  • Assists in the development and implementation of an individualized treatment plan for each assigned patient.
  • Provides for emergency and outpatient care, which may include accompanying a patient on a transfer to another facility.
  • Complies with evaluation, treatment and documentation guidelines described.
  • Completes required documentation in the electronic health record in an accurate and timely manner.
  • Oversees care delivered by the Licensed Practical Nurses and other health care disciplines.
  • Adheres to facility policies and procedures and participates in facility quality improvement and safety programs.
  • Accesses continuing education opportunities appropriate to discipline and responsibilities in order to maintain clinical currency. 
  • Will attend a minimum of two tele-events hosted in this facility a year related to trauma to maintain currency of trauma hours for designation.
  • Responds to all code blues within the hospital and initiates therapeutic regime according to ACLS guidelines, and direct patient care activities until the physician arrives.
  • Checks emergency supplies and equipment for proper function and adequate supply on a regular basis.
  • Cleans, maintains and calibrates equipment as needed.  Places maintenance repair requests on equipment that is not functioning correctly.
  • Demonstrates familiarity with facility and department infection control policies.
  • Maintains confidentiality of patients, department and hospital.
  • Has a clear understanding of the Health Insurance Portability and Accountability Act (HIPAA) regulations and develops and follows department policies and procedures to maintain compliance.
  • Works effectively as a team member within the facility to provide quality service to hospital departments through communication, cooperation, and collaboration.
  • Attends a minimum of 75% of department meetings and 95% of mandatory in-services.
  • Expands job-related knowledge and skills to improve and adjust to change.
  • Participates in departmental CQI.
  • Follows policies and procedures to contribute to the efficiency of the Hospital.
  • Performs other related duties as needed in order to support the achievement of department goals and objectives.
  • Performs any other duties as may be assigned.
  • Completes required continuous training and education, including department specific requirements to maintain current competency.
  • Reads and adheres to the “Cerner Competencies and Condition of Employment” policy (#01.0169).

PHYSICAL DEMANDS

  • Frequent standing and walking.
  • Frequent lifting and/carrying objects weighing 10 pounds or more.
  • Ability to stoop, bend, reach, and grasp with arms and hands.
  • Ability to proof read, check documents for accuracy, and to enter or transform words or data using a keyboard.
  • Ability to work with hands in cleaning and sterilizing solutions when necessary.
  • Good personal hygiene and adherence to the facility dress code.

SPECIAL DEMANDS

  • Ability to work in close contact with medical and interdisciplinary staff.
  • May require travel to attend continuing education, workshops, and seminars outside the institution.
  • Ability to perform duties that require working with body fluids or other specimens.

 
KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS AND ABILITIES REQUIRED

  • Graduation from an accredited School of Nursing with current Registered Nurse licensure for the state.
  • Current BLS, ACLS, TNCC, NRP, and PALS certifications.
  • Completes 8 trauma hours every 2 years (6 hours in adult and 2 hours in pediatric trauma).
  • Excellent communication and interpersonal skills.
  • Specialized experience in obstetrical care.
  • Verbal and written English communication skills for safe and effective patient care and to meet documentation standards.
  • Demonstrated ability to perform necessary skills and competencies.
  • Desire to work within a comprehensive health care team.
