Local Pharmacists educate Preschoolers about Poison Prevention

Gothenburg Health's pharmacists, Niki Salomon and Johnna Richter, with Gothenburg Discount Pharmacy's pharmacy student, Kaycee, talked to around 100 preschool-age kids at Early Learning Academy, Building Blocks, Ohana Preschool, Agape Preschool, Joyful Noise Preschool, and Learning Adventures in April about Poison Prevention.

"Annually in the spring I talk to as many preschool programs as possible to spread awareness of possible poisons in the home," Salomon said. "Kids are usually very receptive, and I hear from preschool providers each year that the lessons learned at that session stick with the kids and provide classroom discussion long after the visit."

The program includes a video titled "Poison Proof with Pinky" to provide talking points between preschoolers and their families. The 20-minute education session also provides magnets with the poison center phone number, Pinky coloring books and information about proper drug disposal.

The Nebraska Regional Poison Center is a free and confidential community service to the public. It identifies poisons as anything that can harm you if it is used in the wrong way, by the wrong person and in the wrong amount. Here are tips for poison prevention that they recommend:

Check your home and garage cleaning and laundry supplies, plants, alcohol, pesticides, gasoline, and medicine. Keep them locked up and out of sight.

Never refer to medicine as "candy." Put medicines including vitamins up and away after every use. Read all labels carefully on medicine and household products.

Never mix household products together. Keep chemicals in their original containers.

Keep liquid nicotine, vape pens and cigarettes out of the reach of children and locked up. Be aware that many product labels look like candy or other liquids that can entice kids.
