Gothenburg Health, a Critical Access Hospital and Rural Health Clinic, located in beautiful central Nebraska (close to North Platte and Kearney), is currently seeking an energetic and motivated individual to join our team.

The Patient Accounts Representative  will perform the duties and responsibilities necessary in the process of delivering quality healthcare.  This position is responsible for all facets of the Patient Accounts process.  He/she may be assigned specific tasks but should remain competent to assume any assigned task at any moment. 


  • Perform patient accounting functions including, but not limited to, payment posting and validation, account follow-up, answering phones, problem resolution, customer service, financial assistance processing, and any other duties as assigned. 
  • Knowledge of insurance guidelines, including HMO/PPO, Medicare, and Medicaid plans
  • Maintain competency in Cerner Revenue Cycle applications and assist with annual validation testing
  • Adheres to facility policies and procedures and participates in facility quality improvement and safety programs.
  • Maintains confidentiality of patients, department and hospital.
  • Has a clear understanding of the Health Insurance Portability and Accountability Act (HIPAA) regulations and follows department policies and procedures to maintain compliance.
  • Works effectively as a team member within the facility to provide quality service to hospital departments through communication, cooperation, and collaboration.
  • Attends a minimum of 75% of department meetings and 95% of mandatory in-services.
  • Expands job-related knowledge and skills to improve and adjust to change.
  • Participates in departmental CQI.
  • Follows policies and procedures to contribute to the efficiency of the Hospital.
  • Performs any other duties as may be assigned.
  • Completes required continuous training and education, including department specific requirements to maintain current competency.
  • Reads and adheres to the “Cerner Competencies and Condition of Employment” policy (#01.0169).


  • May require sitting and keyboarding/typing for long periods of time.
  • Occasionally lift up to 10-20 pounds.


  • Ability to perform routine duties on a continuous basis.
  • Tact, courtesy, and patience in dealing with staff members and the public.
  • Ability to handle multiple interruptions with patience and tact.
  • Initiative and judgment in planning own work.
  • May require travel to attend continuing education, workshops, and seminars outside the institution.


  • 2-3 years medical billing experience preferred
  • Exceptional customer service and phone etiquette
  • Communicate clearly and concisely, both orally and in writing
  • Operate a variety of modern office equipment, and have word processing skills/computer skills.
  • Maintain confidentiality of patient medical record, including health and financial, clinic and hospital
  • Learn, interpret and apply policies and procedures
  • Establish and maintain effective working relationships with those contacted in the course of work
  • Convey a non-judgmental tone about patient’s decisions regardless of personal beliefs
  • Meet standards of providing comprehensive referrals inclusive of all providers
  • Work with wide variety of individuals from various social, economic, and lifestyle backgrounds
  • Once fully trained and oriented, work with minimal supervision
  • Understand basic mathematical principles
  • Cooperate, accept, and utilize supervision
  • Remain focused during a fast-paced day with ability to organize/prioritize work to ensure daily workload is completed.
  • Ability to react and perform under stress and emergency situations with ability to exercise sound judgment skills.
  • Ability to meet physical requirements specified above.
