Harrison Earns Specialized Certification to Expand Lymphedema Care

Patients experiencing lymphedema now have expanded access to specialized care at Gothenburg Health following additional training completed by occupational therapist Brady Harrison.

In August, Harrison traveled to Florida to complete an intensive certification program and earned his Certified Lymphedema Therapist (CLT) credential. The training provides advanced education in identifying, treating and managing lymphedema, a chronic condition that causes swelling when the lymphatic system is unable to effectively move fluid through the body. Lymphedema most commonly affects the arms and legs and can occur following cancer treatment, injury, surgery or genetic conditions that damage the lymphatic system or limit its ability to function properly, according to the Mayo Clinic.

The certification allows Harrison to provide specialized treatment techniques designed to reduce swelling, improve mobility, decrease discomfort, and help patients better manage their condition. Treatment often includes compression therapy, exercise, skin care education and manual lymphatic drainage, a gentle hands-on technique that helps move excess fluid away from affected areas.

“Earning my CLT credential allows me to better serve patients living with lymphedema and related conditions,” Harrison said. “This training provided advanced knowledge and hands-on experience that will help improve outcomes and quality of life for those who need this specialized care.”

According to the Academy of Lymphatic Studies, the certification course included more than 135 hours of education and practical training focused on the lymphatic system, assessment techniques and complete decongestive therapy, which is considered the standard treatment approach for lymphedema. Participants learn how to evaluate patients, create individualized treatment plans, and provide long-term management strategies.

Lymphedema affects millions of people worldwide and is often associated with cancer treatment when lymph nodes are removed or damaged, according to the National Cancer Institute. The condition can develop months or even years after treatment and, if left unmanaged, may lead to chronic swelling, skin changes, reduced mobility, and an increased risk of infection. While there is no cure, early intervention and specialized therapy can help control symptoms and improve daily function.

Harrison’s certification strengthens Gothenburg Health’s rehabilitation services and allows patients to receive advanced lymphedema treatment closer to home rather than traveling to larger medical centers.

As awareness of lymphedema continues to grow, Harrison hopes the expanded service will help patients recognize symptoms early and seek treatment before complications develop.
