Position Summary
The outpatient treatment nurse is responsible for administering intravenous medicine, vitamins, or fluids and will be accountable for the coordination of nursing care for all patients needing outpatient treatment. The nurse provides specialized infusion therapy and patient education, ensuring the highest quality of care for our patients. They will be under the direction of the director of nursing and will work in coordination with the acute nursing team. This position will provide safe, effective, and appropriate nursing care for all types of patients needing outpatient nursing services. This role involves collaborating with multidisciplinary teams to enhance patient outcomes and operational efficiencies.
Key Accountabilities
- Schedule and perform all outpatient treatments to include everything but chemotherapy unless certified including:
- Prior auth
- Order faxing
- Scheduling in Cerner
- Notifying and confirming monthly appointments
- Port flush management
- Weekly pharmacy updates
- Monthly chemotherapy schedule with notification to oncology provider
- Professional communication with any outside providers
- Coordinate any needed prior authorizations for treatments.
- Manage Prolia program
- Be a resource and super user for any wound vac treatments including being the program facilitator.
- New admissions to hospital greeter/initial point of contact
- Telehealth appointment scheduling and charge initiation
- EMS monthly education scheduling and reminders to EMS with room and material setup
- Will help on acute as schedule allows
- Back-up/secondary case manager:
- Insurance authorization
- Swing bed referrals
- Treatment program needs
- Discharge needs/referrals
- Discharge call-backs
- Utilize Millimans for inpatient criteria
- Willingness to become chemo certified
- Back-up float nursing in areas of previous experience
- Will participate in quality assurance for the outpatient therapy department
- Has a clear understanding of the Health Insurance Portability and Accountability Act (HIPAA) regulations and follows department policies and procedures to maintain compliance.
- Will attend staff meetings and attend continuing education needed for maintaining licensure.
- Positively contributes to team’s decision-making process, effectively collaborates with other team members on interdependent tasks and actively supports implementation of plans to accomplish team objectives.
- If bilingual, will provide translation services to patients as needed for the patient’s care and services
- Other duties as assigned Administer chemotherapy, biotherapy, and other infusion treatments as prescribed.
- Monitor patients for adverse reactions and manage side effects of treatments.
- Educate patients and their families about treatment plans, potential side effects, and post-treatment care.
- Supervise and coordinate infusion services, ensuring compliance with protocols and standards.
- Collaborate with the treatment team(s) to develop and implement individualized care plans.
- Maintain accurate and detailed patient records, including treatment administration and patient responses.
- Provide emotional support and counseling to patients and their families.
- Ensure compliance with all healthcare regulations and protocols.
Position Requirements and Qualifications
- 2-3 years employment in a medical/clinic setting preferred
- Exceptional customer service and phone etiquette
- Communicate clearly and concisely, both orally and in writing
- Operate a variety of modern office equipment and have word processing skills/computer skills.
- Maintain confidentiality of patient medical records, including health and financial, clinic and hospital
- Learn, interpret and apply policies and procedures
- Establish and maintain effective working relationships with those contacted in the course of work
- Convey a non-judgmental tone about patient’s decisions regardless of personal beliefs
- Meet standards of providing comprehensive referrals inclusive of all providers
- Work with a wide variety of individuals from various social, economic, and lifestyle backgrounds
- Once fully trained and oriented, work with minimal supervision
- Understand basic mathematical principles
- Cooperate, accept, and utilize supervision
- Remain focused during a fast-paced day with ability to organize/prioritize work to ensure daily workload is completed.
- Ability to react and perform under stress and emergency situations with ability to exercise sound judgment skills.
- Ability to meet physical requirements specified above. Current Registered Nurse licensure in the state of Nebraska.
- Current BLS certification.
- ACLS, NRP, and PALS certifications within 6 months of hire
- ALSO and TNCC training within 6 months of hire
- NIH Stoke Scale certification preferred
Physical Demands
- General office demands such as sitting, computer use requiring manual dexterity, walking about, bending, and stooping.
- Occasional lifting of 50lbs including assisting transfer of patients
- Frequent lifting and carrying objects weighing 25 pounds or more.
- Ability to proofread, check documents for accuracy, and to enter or transform words or data using a keyboard.
- Ability to work with hands in cleaning and sterilizing solutions when necessary.
- Good personal hygiene and adherence to the facility dress code.
