Phillip Miller Finds True Calling in Nursing

From an athletic training student to now a charge nurse at Gothenburg Health, Phillip Miller has had multiple positions in the medical field over the last couple of years. But he didn’t initially see himself working in the medical space until a series of events changed his mind.

Miller studied athletic training at Black Hills State University in Spearfish, S.D., which led him to an internship in cardiac rehab. While interning, his grandpa also had open-heart surgery. Both his internship and the nurses who worked on his grandpa made a significant impression on Miller.

Rather than continuing his athletic training education, Miller eventually graduated with a wellness management degree, yet the idea of being a nurse still interested him.

Miller started this new career path by going through the EMT program at Mid-Plains Community College while waiting to get into its nursing program. The EMT training helped Miller get closer to the medical field and allowed him to keep working while continuing his education at the same time.

After becoming a registered nurse in 2006, Gothenburg Health hired Miller and he has worn multiple hats ever since.

Miller has been a trauma care coordinator, filled in as an oncology nurse at Callahan Cancer Center, and is a charge nurse in his current role.

One of Miller’s favorite things about nursing is the variety, as he never sees the same thing twice when he goes into work.

Another favorite thing about nursing is the bond he shares with his patients at Gothenburg Health. Working in a small community, Miller gets to know everybody and sees them through all chapters of their lives. From birth to death and everything in between. Seeing patients appreciate the care they get is what fills his bucket at the end of the day and doesn’t think there’s a more rewarding job.
