Position Summary

The Ward Clerk performs general clerical duties, handling multiple management task in the unit and ensuring the unit operates effectively. Acting as an intermediary between patients and the healthcare employees.

Key Accountabilities

• Provide telephone coverage for the unit answer calls, receive and distribute messages, transfer calls as appropriate for promptness, courtesy and accuracy

• Assist with admissions, transfers, and discharge to complete necessary forms and arrangements.

• Collaborate and interact with other disciplines and departments such as medical records, dietary, housekeeping, lab, x-ray, physical therapy, social services to expedite processing of patients through procedures

• Perform clerical duties to assist the Charge Nurse and/or Nursing Service Administrator as well as the care unit.

• Keeps the staffing log, scanning into the computer

• Greeting patients and families for a high-quality experience.

• Register patients for care

• Scan documents into the EHR for proper and accurate record keeping 

• Maintain equipment, supplies and the physical environment of the nurse desk for a proper work environment. 

• Calls personnel to acquire extra staff or replacement personnel when needed.

• Serves as a resource person for the department and other employees.

• Demonstrates familiarity with facility and department infection control policies.

Minimum Qualifications

• High School Graduate

• Six months of related experience involving patient care

• Understand basic mathematical principles

• Basic Life Support (BLS) certification

• Possess or obtain a valid Nebraska Driver’s license

• Competent computer skills; literacy in word processing and basic computer programs.
