Our Facility

Gothenburg Health is a critical access hospital and rural health clinic in Gothenburg, Nebraska, dedicated to serving patients throughout Dawson County and the surrounding communities. Originally built in 1969, the hospital has undergone multiple expansions and renovations to ensure access to high‑quality, modern healthcare close to home. A $3.5 million addition completed in 2004 enhanced clinical services, followed by the opening of a 17,000‑square‑foot physician clinic in 2011, bringing state‑of‑the‑art outpatient care and room for continued growth.

In 2014, Gothenburg Health began a $31 million renovation and expansion project designed to meet the evolving healthcare needs of rural Nebraska. Completed in phases through spring 2018, the project added a modern surgical suite, new inpatient wing, expanded clinical space for in‑house and visiting specialists, advanced imaging services including in‑house MRI, a welcoming main entrance, and a medically integrated YMCA connected directly to the hospital.

The YMCA at Gothenburg Health made Gothenburg the smallest community in the United States to feature a YMCA. Directly connected to the hospital, the YMCA includes a four‑lane pool, high‑school regulation gymnasium, second‑floor walking track, cardio and weightlifting areas, and a large group fitness room—supporting wellness, rehabilitation, and preventive care for the entire community.

Continuing its investment in patient‑centered care, Gothenburg Health completed additional facility renovations in October 2024. These updates include a renovated Surgery Department with updated pre‑ and post‑operative areas, an expanded Emergency Department with two larger trauma bays, a new chemotherapy treatment room, and a dedicated lactation room to support patients, staff, and families. These improvements enhance patient comfort, safety, privacy, and access to specialized care services close to home.

Gothenburg Health is a non‑profit healthcare organization governed by a publicly elected board of directors. Committed to the long‑term health of the community, Gothenburg Health invests in progressive technology, expanded services, and facility improvements to ensure a strong, sustainable future for rural healthcare in central Nebraska.
