Gothenburg Health Now Offering Tubeless Insulin Pump with Local Certified Trainer
Gothenburg Health is now offering the option of a cutting-edge insulin pump system for patients with diabetes, thanks to Shay Holbrook, RN BSN CDCES who became certified in July to train and support users of the Omnipod® tubeless insulin pump.
This exciting new option provides local patients with a more flexible, adaptive way to manage their diabetes—without the burden of multiple daily injections. Holbrook, a Certified Diabetes Care and Education Specialist, is one of the only certified trainers in the region and available to assist patients through training, setup, and ongoing support.
The Omnipod system, which requires only a prescription, works with continuous glucose monitors (CGMs) and delivers fast-acting insulin through a small, wearable pod. The device is tubeless, waterproof, and designed to be worn comfortably on different areas of the body, improving insulin absorption and reducing site fatigue.
“It’s very cool how it learns the patient,” Holbrook said. “It predicts where their blood sugar will be in the next 60 minutes and adjusts insulin levels accordingly.”
The pump uses adaptive technology to automatically adjust insulin delivery based on real-time and predicted glucose levels. If blood sugar is trending high, it delivers less insulin; if a drop is expected, it increases the dose. Weekly data is shared through a secure portal, allowing Holbrook and Gothenburg Health providers to monitor progress and make adjustments.
Holbrook trains patients on how to use the pump and how to manage their insulin dosing. The system is not permanent and can be stopped or restarted at any time, offering flexibility for those unsure about making a long-term switch.
One Gothenburg Health patient has already seen a significant improvement in A1C levels within just one month of use.
The Omnipod system does not require special insurance and supports any insulin dose. Around-the-clock customer support is available 365 days a year, and local pharmacies have been instrumental in ensuring timely access to supplies.
According to Insulet, the company behind Omnipod, the system was developed to free people from the burden of daily injections. Today, it offers continuous insulin delivery through a simple, connected device that empowers people living with diabetes.
