Phlebotomist

Position Summary

Verifies patient identification and explains sampling procedures to patients. Obtains blood specimens by performing venipunctures and finger sticks. Maintains specimen integrity by using aseptic technique, following department procedures, and observing isolation procedures.

 

Accountabilities

  • Greet patients and verify their identity

  • Explaining blood draw procedures to patients and answering any questions about the process

  • Collect blood samples by performing venipunctures and fingerstick/heel sticks

  • Label all samples accurately and verifying patient information

  • Follow all health and safety protocols and procedures to maintain sanitary work areas

  • Gather medical testing material, including needles, sample vials, blood storage bags, test tubes, alcohol wipes, tourniquets etc.

  • Activate and log in patient samples into Cerner patient information center

  • Transport samples in a timely manner and in accordance with outlined policies and procedures

  • Explain tests to patients and answer any questions they might have

  • Complete all work in accordance with outlined hospital and laboratory guidelines, and federal, state, and local requirements

  • Train to collect DOT/Non DOT drug screens and Breath Alcohol Testing

  • Answering phones and helping patient meet their needs in a courteous manner

  • Preparing and Performing EKG’s

 

Minimum Qualifications

  • High school diploma or general education degree (GED) required

  • Phlebotomy experience highly preferred

  • Strong eye for detail

  • Excellent interpersonal skills

  • Proficient verbal and written English skills

  • Proven ability to prioritize a variety of tasks

  • Familiar with infection control policies and procedures
